Howard Zinn -
Commentary on Howard Zinn and his books on history.
A recent letter to the editor in the New Hampshire Union Leader newspaper prompted me to add my thoughts on Howard Zinn and history. This letter was written by Harvey Lord commenting on one of Mona Charen's recent columns.
"she [Mona Charen] makes mention of Howard Zinn. He is unfortunately the author of a widely-
A few years ago, I read Mr. Zinn’s book A People's History Of The United States. I was sickened by his misrepresentation of history and historical events. A biased account of history would be misstating his views, which are clearly that of secular humanism. His agenda is Marxist/Socialist. In a word, he is anarchist. Or as he stated. “I am an anarchist, and according to anarchist principles nation states become obstacles to a true humanistic globalization.”2
His writings have been used in education to further the agenda of Secular Humanism, which controls most public schools in the United States today. Thus, students unknowingly are indoctrinated into a Godless and hateful view of history.
Conservative pundit Daniel J. Flynn in an article titled Howard Zinn's Biased History concluded:
“Zinn utters perhaps the most honest words of A People’s History of the United States in the conclusion of the book’s 1995 edition, conceding that his work is “a biased account.” “I am not troubled by that,” he adds, “because the mountain of history books under which we all stand leans so heavily in the other direction—so tremblingly respectful of states and statesmen and so disrespectful, by inattention, to people’s movements—that we need some counterforce to avoid being crushed into submission.” Perhaps the reason they lean so heavily in the other direction is that they are based on facts, not leftwing prejudice.
“I wanted my writing of history and my teaching of history to be a part of social struggle,” Zinn remarks in an interview conducted long after the release of A People’s History of the United States. “I wanted to be a part of history and not just a recorder and teacher of history. So that kind of attitude towards history, history itself as a political act, has always informed my writing and my teaching.” Indeed it has. Only let’s not call it history. Howard Zinn is a master of cheap Marxist propaganda. His book is a dagger aimed at the heart the country that has given him more freedom than most of the writers who have ever written and made him a millionaire in the process.”3
It has been written that there are different versions of history. There are different views yes, but there is only one version of history. History is God’s providence. In every age people make choices between good and evil. It is in our collective choice that will determine our history. The choices of others from the past has been made and dutifully recorded by God in his book of life.
Civil War correspondent and history author Charles Carleton Coffin observed:
"You will notice that while the oppressors have carried out their plans, and had things their own way, there were other forces silently at work, which in time undermined their plans, as if a Divine hand were directing the counter-
There is meaning and patterns to history because God is in control. (More to be added shortly)
